Carved Onyx Punch Bowl
This carved onyx punch bowl was originally a gift from Mexico to a member of the E.W. Scripps family of newspapers and philanthropic fame. It was brought to the US during the Panama-California Exhibit of 1915 - 16, and was later given to the Museum’s volunteer group, the Covey, by Josephine “Josie” Scripps.
Josie Scripps was an avid collector of minerals and also managed her family’s dairy ranch in the San Luis Rey Valley. She volunteered tirelessly for the San Diego Natural History Museum beginning in the 1940s; she was the Museum’s honorary curator of mineralogy from 1973 - to 1981.
