CIRCE: Prairie Falcon - Female; Weight 1.5 pounds; Born 2011
She was caught and tumbled in turbulent air from the wake of a military jet at Point Mugu. The tumble injured one eye and broke a bone in her wing. The wing was successfully treated but she lost sight in her left eye making her non-releasable.
Prairie Falcons inhabit open arid land and are found primarily in the western US and Great Plains. They hunt small animals and small to medium sized birds. Unlike the Peregrine Falcon, which often dives after avian prey, Prairie Falcons usually fly level and fast, catching birds from behind in what's called "pursuit hunting."
